Unlike free weights, Gymstick creates instability when exercising. This increases the type of muscle recruitment that forces a greater improvement in core and joint strength and stability. So in addition to working major muscle groups, Gymstick also works all the small supporting muscles used for balance and coordination, usually in the same workout.  

The other key difference to exercising with free weights is that the direction and amount of resistance is not dictated by gravity. Free weights provide force in a downward direction along the line of gravity, however Gymstick provides resistance in any desired direction or body position. This for example, allows for more effective rotation exercises.
